Counseling Adolescents and Adults with Autism

With the most recent data reporting ASD rates at 1:58 individuals (CDC, 2018), counselors must be prepared to work effectively with this population.  This presentation will discuss the unique communication needs of individuals with ASD and provide intervention tools to assist the counseling process.

1. Attendees will examine the challenges and barriers experienced by individuals with ASD and their family during the transition out of high school.
2. Attendees will explore potential solutions to common educational and employment struggles.
3. Attendees will be guided through a summary of recent literature that highlights significant societal challenges (employment, friendship, medical care) experienced by individuals with ASD.
4. Attendees will be provided visuals and strategies to assist in counseling this population.
